Though the Kuklapolitans began their daily show in 1947, "kines"
(KINN-eez)
were not made until 1949, after the show went national. Viewers
around
the country would see each kine weeks after the episode had been
broadcast
live to the cities linked by the NBC coaxial cable. That's why
the
episode entitled "Kine Christmas" was filmed on November 16, 1949 - so
each station around the country could air it before Christmas.
Kukla,
Fran and Ollie aired at 6 p.m. Central Time each weekday evening
for
a half-hour, until November of 1951 when it began airing from 6 to
6:15.
Beginning in the fall of 1952, it aired once a week on Sunday, at 3 pm.
In 1954, the show moved to the ABC network. No films of these
shows
exist, perhaps because by that time network shows could be broadcast
live
to the entire country, eliminating the need for kines.
Fortunately,
by that time much of Burr's best work had been preserved in these films.
